Under the leadership of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), Tarsus University organized a panel entitled “Higher Education, Science and Future Perspectives in Gaza” as part of the Science Café events. Held in a hybrid format and hosted by the Tarsus Museum, the panel comprehensively addressed the current state of higher education in Palestine and Gaza, the challenging conditions faced by universities, the difficulties experienced by students throughout their educational processes, and the future of academic life.
The panel examined various dimensions of the sustainability of educational and scientific activities in Gaza. Dr. Suad Ghaben from Al-Azhar University, Dr. Abdelrahman Eid from An-Najah National University, and Dr. Nahed R. Eid from Al-Azhar University and the Islamic University of Gaza participated as speakers via remote connection. Rana Elbasha, a student in the Department of Finance and Banking at Tarsus University, also took part in the programme as a speaker. The panel was moderated by Dr. Nour Awad, a postdoctoral researcher in the field of Food Technology at Tarsus University.
The opening speech of the panel was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ali Özen, Rector of Tarsus University. Drawing attention not only to the humanitarian dimension of the events in Gaza but also to their impact on education and scientific life, Prof. Dr. Özen emphasized the efforts made to sustain educational and scientific activities even under the most severe conditions. Highlighting the importance of strengthening academic solidarity, Prof. Dr. Özen stated that safeguarding knowledge and science is a shared responsibility towards both the present and the future.
Following the opening speech by Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Özen, the panel continued with assessments addressing different dimensions of higher education in Gaza. Dr. Suad Ghaben, Dr. Abdelrahman Eid, and Dr. Nahed R. Eid shared their assessments of the current state of universities, science, and academic life in Gaza. The speakers conveyed their evaluations of the conditions facing higher education and the future of educational and scientific activities to the participants. Rana Elbasha, a student in the Department of Banking and Finance at Tarsus University, shared her experiences as a student from Gaza and described the conditions faced by students in Gaza. The panel concluded after the speakers’ assessments and the questions raised by the participants had been addressed.
