Hosted by Tarsus University, the event ‘Civil Society Organisations Meet Students – III, From the Field to the Campus’ brought together numerous civil society organisation (CSO) representatives with the academic community and students. Organised by the Department of Social Services at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, the event also featured information stands for civil society organisations at the central campus.
Speaking at the event, Tarsus University Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Osman Murat Özkendir stated that universities have an important responsibility in developing civil society awareness and expressed his pride and pleasure in hosting this event. In her speech during the programme, Head of the Department of Social Services Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Alican Şen stressed the great importance of civil society organisations coming together with students in terms of sharing experience and knowledge. Şen also stated that combining field experience with academic knowledge makes a significant contribution to students' professional development.
Manolya Karaoğlan, President of the Mersin Branch of SHUDER (Association of Social Service Specialists), who spoke during the opening speeches of the event programme, drew attention to the importance of volunteer work for society and stated that such work plays an important role in social solidarity.
Naci Yılmaz, Director of Social Services in Mersin, stated in his speech that civil society organisations represent the conscience of society and play a complementary role to the services provided by the state in solving social problems. He also emphasised that these organisations strengthen individuals' sense of belonging to society and make a significant difference through their work with disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.
The programme, which was held with a large turnout, continued with presentations by representatives and officials of NGOs carrying out important work in Mersin and Tarsus. The speeches included important assessments on volunteering, social solidarity and social responsibility. Officials explained to the audience the services they provide for the benefit of society.
